April: Move More Month

Being active is key to a healthy lifestyle, getting up and moving can be difficult when working from a desk all day. April is designated as Move More Month by the American Heart Association. The month is a chance for us to make a plan to become more active throughout the day. Here are a few quick tips to getting up and moving, even when your job isn’t inherently active.

  • Walk during your break

If you have a chance to take a break throughout your day, do some walking throughout the office or around the building. The slow creep into warmer temperatures of spring is a great excuse to get outside!

  • Take a few minutes in between meetings or sessions and do some jumping jacks

Can’t leave your desk? Stand up and do a few jumping jacks. If you’re not in the mood for cardio, do a few stretches to give your body a chance to relax before jumping into a new task.

  • Do lunges during your lunch

Do some lunges during your lunch break, if those are difficult, get moving in whatever way is comfortable. Walking around, moving your arms, or doing some stretches are a great way to reset before the rest of your workday.

  • Take a brain break and walk around the office

If you have a few minutes to spare, take a walk around your office. Try exploring inside or outside if you’re able and take a few minutes for a brain break before getting into something else.

While this list isn’t exhaustive the main goal is to get moving! Some people may feel comfortable going on a run while others will get moving through stretching. No shame! Any movement can be great for your body, try and take some time out of your day, at work, or at home. Even five minutes can make a difference for your brain and body. Best of luck!
